LiftMaster L956W Wireless Control Panel – Installation & Setup Guide

Before You Begin

  • Confirm that your garage door opener uses a white “Learn” button (Security+ 3.0).
  • Verify that the included CR2032 battery is installed in the control panel.
  • Choose a mounting location within line-of-sight of the garage door opener.

Tools Required

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Pencil or marker
  • Drill with 1/16” bit (optional)

Step 1: Open the L956W Housing

  1. Locate the release tab at the bottom of the control panel.
  2. Gently pull outward to separate the front cover from the base plate.
  3. Set the front portion aside for programming.

Step 2: Mount the Base Plate

  1. Hold the base plate against the wall at a comfortable height (typically 5 feet from the floor).
  2. Mark the mounting hole positions.
  3. Drill pilot holes if needed.
  4. Secure the base plate to the wall using the included screws.

Step 3: Program the L956W to Your Opener

  1. Press the Learn button on your garage door opener. The LED will illuminate or blink depending on the model.
  2. Within 30 seconds, press and hold the large control button on the L956W.
  3. Release when the opener lights flash or you hear a click, indicating successful pairing.

Step 4: Reattach the Front Cover

  1. Align the top tabs of the front housing with the base plate.
  2. Press the bottom of the cover until it snaps securely into place.

Step 5: Test Operation

  • Press the large button to verify the garage door opens and closes properly.
  • Press the light button to confirm the opener light toggles on/off.

Troubleshooting

  • No response from opener: Replace the CR2032 battery and reprogram.
  • Poor range: Move the control panel closer to the opener and avoid metal surfaces.
  • Programming fails: Ensure the opener Learn button is white (Security+ 3.0 only).

Maintenance

  • Replace the CR2032 battery every 1–2 years.
  • Periodically wipe the surface clean with a dry cloth.
