How do I program my LiftMaster Security+ 3.0 garage door opener to HomeLink?
Before you start (required):
- Do NOT use the garage door opener’s Learn button. HomeLink must be trained using a Security+ 3.0 remote transmitter.
- Make sure your Security+ 3.0 remote is already paired to the operator (the opener) before programming HomeLink.
- Choose the specific remote button you use for that door (Remote Button 1, 2, or 3). You must use that same button when training HomeLink.
- Timing: Once you begin, complete Steps 2 and 3 within 90 seconds.
Compatibility note: Security+ 3.0 operators are generally compatible with HomeLink versions 4, 5, and 6 (commonly in 2016+ vehicles), but compatibility can vary by vehicle make/model.
-
Select the HomeLink button to program
- Press and release the HomeLink button you want to program.
- Confirm the HomeLink LED begins flashing slowly.
-
If the HomeLink LED rapidly flashes and then turns off, that button likely already has a stored signal. Do one of the following:
- Override (recommended): Press and hold that same HomeLink button until the LED begins flashing slowly, then release.
- Or clear all HomeLink buttons (vehicle procedure varies by manufacturer).
-
Older HomeLink (HL4 note): If you have an older HomeLink model, you may need to press and hold the HomeLink button while adapting/training.
-
Program (train) the HomeLink button using the Security+ 3.0 remote
- While the HomeLink LED is flashing slowly, hold your Security+ 3.0 remote very close to the HomeLink button (a few inches away).
- Press and hold the remote button that operates the door (the same button already paired to the opener).
- Keep holding until the HomeLink LED changes from a slow blink to a rapid flash (often the indicator also changes to green).
- Release all buttons once the HomeLink LED is flashing rapidly.
-
Complete setup and test
- Press and hold the newly programmed HomeLink button for 3–5 seconds.
-
Success check: If the garage door begins to move on the second press of the HomeLink button, programming was successful.
Quick tip for identifying HomeLink v4+ behavior:
- When training succeeds, many v4+ systems show a green rapid flash.
- A simple press & release on an empty HomeLink button typically enters a slow blink training mode (common on v4+).
Troubleshooting (common fixes):
- If HomeLink won’t enter slow-blink training mode, try overriding the button (press/hold until it slow blinks) and retry Step 2.
- If the rapid-flash confirmation never happens, move the remote closer, try a slightly different angle, and ensure you’re using the correct remote button.
- If it times out, restart from Step 1 and complete Steps 2–3 within 90 seconds.
