Quick Overview

Exterior air switch with metal case, (N.O. contact).

A sensing edge should be used on every door for the protection of pedestrians and vehicles. Depending on the type of edge and type of control wiring of the operator with which it is used, the function of the edge will vary.

Standard Edge:
A standard 2-wire edge will cause a door to reverse when it meets an obstruction while closing if the operator has type B2, C2, S2, T, T1 or TS control wiring.

Failsafe Edge:
A failsafe edge (or self monitoring edge) requires either a 3- or 4-wire connection and will not only cause a door to reverse while closing but will also render the door inoperable if the edge is not installed or if it becomes damaged after installation. A failsafe electric edge requires an operator with type F2 wiring or the use of a CPS II option board. The infrared link-edge is inherently failsafe and requires only type B2, C2, S2, T, T1 or TS control wiring.

The LiftMaster 50101 Switch, Pneumatic — Exterior, Metal Case is an OEM control accessory that translates air pressure from a driveway air hose or pneumatic sensing edge into an electrical signal for LiftMaster operators. Built for outdoor use, the rugged metal enclosure mounts near the door or gate and connects to standard control inputs to trigger actions such as open, close, or safety/reversing when a vehicle or object compresses the connected air tube. It’s a dependable replacement part for maintaining or upgrading air-hose activation on LiftMaster commercial door operators and gate openers in industrial, commercial, and facility applications.

Installation is hardwired: connect the air line to the switch, mount the exterior case securely, and wire the switch output to the operator’s control terminals per the operator manual. After installation, verify proper actuation and release, and test the system to meet job-site safety practices and applicable UL 325/ANSI guidelines. For best results, pair the 50101 with compatible driveway air hose or pneumatic sensing edges, and have a qualified technician perform setup and periodic maintenance. Compatibility can vary by operator model; confirm whether your control board requires a normally open or normally closed contact before wiring.
