Quick Overview

  • Dual-path surge suppression protects the opener’s electronics from spikes on 120V AC power and on low-voltage control wiring (wall control/safety sensors).
  • Compatibility: Works with most LiftMaster, Chamberlain, and Craftsman 120V residential openers (e.g., LiftMaster 8165W, 8365W, 8500/8500W, 8550W/85503, 8587W, 87504-267); not for commercial or 240V units.
  • Electrical: For North American 120V AC, 60 Hz circuits; indoor, dry-location use only.
  • Installation: Plug-and-play—plug the opener into the 990LM and connect the in-line low-voltage module leads to the wall control terminals; no programming required.
  • Form factor: Low-profile plug-in module fits a standard duplex outlet; compact in-line control-wire module mounts near the opener head or wall console.
  • Included: 1 plug-in AC surge module, 1 in-line low-voltage surge module with leads, and installation instructions.
  • Benefit: Helps prevent logic board damage and downtime from lightning-induced surges and utility power transients.

The LiftMaster 990LM Surge Protector is a plug-in accessory designed to safeguard residential garage door openers from damaging power spikes and lightning-induced surges. Positioned between the opener and a grounded 120V household outlet, it provides line protection for the opener’s electronics and can also be wired to protect low-voltage control circuits, helping shield wall controls and safety reversing sensor lines. This replacement/upgrade accessory is commonly used with LiftMaster, Chamberlain, and many Craftsman openers that plug into a standard North American outlet, including models using Security+ and Security+ 2.0 technology.

Installation is straightforward: mount the unit near the operator, plug it into a properly grounded 120V outlet, then plug the garage door opener into the protected receptacle. For full protection, route the low-voltage control wiring through the protector per the manufacturer’s instructions. Use indoors in a dry location and ensure the branch circuit grounding is intact; do not use with extension cords or daisy-chain into power strips. The 990LM is intended to reduce the risk of surge-related damage in typical residential garage applications and does not replace proper grounding or lightning protection practices.
